News emerged this week embroiling Jeremy Corbyn in a fresh anti-semitism row after a Facebook comment was unearthed appearing to show the Labour leader supporting an artist whose “offensive” graffiti was about to be scrubbed off a wall in London’s East End in 2012.

On a Facebook post in 2012, Corbyn offered his support to Street Artist, Mear One, whose mural – which featured a number of anti-Semitic stereotypes – was about to be removed after complaints from residents.

Mear One said in the post:

“Tomorrow they want to buff my mural Freedom of Expression. London Calling, Public art.”

To which the then Labour backbencher replied:

“Why? You are in good company. Rockerfeller [sic] destroyed Diego Viera’s [sic] mural because it includes a picture of Lenin.”

However, a statement released by the Labour Party in response to the incident stated that “Jeremy was responding to concerns about the removal of public art on the grounds of freedom of speech” and went on to say “However, the mural was offensive, used antisemitic imagery, which has no place in our society, and it is right that it was removed.”

The Labour leader has also since indicated that he did not look at the image properly before offering his support to Mear One. Furthermore, numerous Labour MPs have jumped to support the Labour leader after the comment emerged, with one stating that Corbyn doesn’t have an anti-Semitic bone in his body.

However, many rabidly anti-Corbyn figures in the right-wing media have jumped to use the incident to accuse the Labour leader of being a raging anti-Semite.

Dan Hodges said that anybody campaigning for Jeremy Corbyn to be Prime Minister would be ‘complicit in normalising anti-Semitism’ because of the mural.

Lot of Labour Moderates speaking out about Corbyn and the Mural. Irrelevant. They have to answer one question. "Will you campaign for him to become Prime Minister?". If the answer is "Yes", then there is no ambiguity. They are complicit in normalising anti-Semitism.

However, the implication that Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-Semite could not be further from the truth.

Corbyn has campaigned tirelessly to try and eradicate all types of racism and discrimination in whatever form they come in, but his incredibly powerful speech at Cable Street in 2016 is possibly the best example to show that he is, in fact, the exact opposite of an anti-Semite.

During the speech Corbyn comes close to tears describing how his Mother stood shoulder to shoulder with London’s Jewish community to oppose Oswald Mosley’s fascists.
