The snap General Election, terrorist attacks and the Grenfell Tower tragedy meant the weeks prior to the summer break were a frantic melange of political and societal hysteria.
The ensuing silly season – domestically at least – might have granted some respite, but as Parliament returns, the people once again march.
Momentum has carried over with aplomb – the anti-austerity protest being held in Bristol this coming Saturday is being billed as the biggest demo ever to be held in the city.
Bristol People’s Assembly have toiled tirelessly over the midsummer weeks, busily organising promotional events such as flash mobs and leafleting campaigns, as well as an event held in solidarity with the McStrikers.
The creation and display of huge banners and street art alongside Bristol’s roadways have been strategically positioned so as to be seen by 120,000 people every day.
The group has also been garnering support from such political luminaries as film director and leftwing activist Ken Loach and likeminded musician Akala, who both plugged the event over the summer months.
The Unions will be represented in numbers, with twenty thousand feet expected to hit the streets. Owen Jones, Mayor Marvin Rees and Green Party Councillor Cleo Lake will all be speaking to the gathered crowd, and – should the positive weather forecast ring accurate – the involvement of a samba band will further enliven proceedings and grant the occasion all the vibrancy of a serotinal festival.
Get Involved
Those attending the march should assemble on Saturday 9th September at 12:00 on College Green, Bristol BS1 5UA.
